There are two ways of decribing a noun. The first way is to say 'the tree is small' and 'the small tree'. When saying this in german, you use different endings depending on the way you say it. When then word 'klein' appears in from of the noun, it has to have an ending. The endings change according the the number, case and gender.

Adjective endings with the definite article.

Adjective endings with no proceding article
